    Exciting opportunity exists for the right individuals to join a progressive non-profit organization as a Support Worker in our Children and Youth Department. The position entails working in specialized residential settings with individuals who are diagnosed with developmental delays, ADHD, FASD as well as Autism, OCD and challenging behaviors.

     

    The ideal candidate must have experience supporting youth with complex behaviours and an understanding of the challenges present for verbal and non-verbal youth with Autism, challenging behaviors and other diagnosis. You must possess knowledge of positive behavioural support strategies, visual support strategies, sensory support strategies, medication administration, critical thinking skills, have the ability to write reports and complete the necessary documentation, as well as maintain boundaries, provide daily structure and consistently follow the support plan outlined within a warm and supportive environment.

     

    Responsibilities

    • The Residential Youth Care Worker is responsible for implementing the day-to-day operations of the home
    • They provide and maintain a safe, supportive environment that is culturally open and accessible in order to support the personal development of resident youth
    • The Residential Youth Care Worker facilitates all aspects of the resident youth's life, including accompanying them on daily recreational outings, to medical appointments, providing all meal preparation, supporting in their bedtime routine and to develop life skills
    • Supporting children and Youth who are diagnosed with development delays, FASD, OCD, Autism Spectrum and challenging behaviors
    • Communicate and support Children and Youth with verbal and nonverbal methods
    • Support plan outlined with a warm and create a supportive environment
    • Writing reports and IPP’s on daily or weekly bases
    • Household duties and maintenance and personal care as needed
    • The Residential Youth Care Worker reports directly to the Residential Coordinator

    Qualifications

     

    • Certificate, diploma, degree or attending education in Child and Youth Care Counseling, Social Work, or a related field. If you are a student we will offer training to enhance your career in the field.
    • Preferably 1 year experience in child & youth care, and/or a combination of relevant education & experience working with youth that are at-risk or have developmental delays and special needs
    • Able to lift up to 50lbs and physically active and participating in activities such as swimming, hiking, and biking
    • Experience with FSAD, PICA, OCD, autism specturm, aggressive behavior, sexually intrusive individuals, good at setting boundaries with supported individuals and also be there to listen and be empathic
    • Available for 3 shifts a week with one of those shifts being on the weekend.
    • Must have previous experience working or volunteering with youth with special needs, including experience following and implementing behavior management and crisis intervention plans and using specialized augmentative and visual communication strategies, such as the use of PECS etc.
    • Able to prioritize, manage crisis, work independently and also as part of a team
    • Must have strong written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to compile accurate records and prepare reports
    • Available for continuous training

     

    The successful candidate must have or ready to acquire:

    • Criminal Record Clearance
    • Valid BCDL class 5 and suitable driver's abstract
    • Valid first aid and CPR certification
    • FoodSafe certification
    • MANDT Training will be offered in house
    • Food Safe Certificate
    • 3 References
    • Others as required
