    Exciting opportunities exists for the right individuals to join a progressive non-profit organization as a Specialized Support Worker in our Children and Youth Department. The position entails working in specialized residential setting with individuals who are diagnosed with developmental delays, ADHD, FASD as well as Autism, OCD and challenging behaviors.

     

    The ideal candidate must have experience supporting youth with complex behaviors and an understanding of the challenges present for verbal and non-verbal youth with Autism, challenging behaviors and other diagnosis.

    You must possess knowledge of positive behavioral, visual and sensory support strategies, medication administration and report writing. Your responsibilities include maintaining boundaries, providing daily structure and consistently following the support plan outlined within a warm and supportive environment.

     

    Responsibilities

    • The Specialized Support Worker is responsible for implementing the day-to-day operations of the home
    • Provide and maintain a safe, supportive environment to foster development of the supported individual
    • The Specialized Support Worker facilitates all aspects of the resident youth's life, which includes accompanying them on daily recreational outings and medical appointments, as well as meal preparation and bedtime routine support
    • Supporting Children and Youth who are diagnosed with development delays, FASD, OCD, Autism Spectrum and challenging behaviors
    • Communicate and support Children and Youth with verbal and nonverbal methods
    • Follow specific plans (behavior management plans) to ensure well-being of the supported individual
    • Write reports and IPP’s on daily or weekly basis
    • Household duties and maintenance, and personal care as needed
    • The Specialized Support Worker reports directly to the Residential Coordinator

    Qualifications

    • Certificate, diploma, degree or attending education in Child and Youth Care Counseling, Social Work, or a related field. If you are a student we will offer training to enhance your career in the field.
    • Preferably 1 year experience in child & youth care, and/or a combination of relevant education & experience working with youth that are at-risk or have developmental delays and special needs
    • Able to lift up to 50lbs and physically active and participating in activities such as swimming, hiking, and biking
    • Experience with FASD, ADHD, OCD, autism spectrum, aggressive and self-harming behaviors
    • Good at setting boundaries with supported individuals while having excellent listening skills and empathy
    • Available for 3 shifts a week with one of those shifts being on the weekend
    • Experience following and implementing behavior management and crisis intervention plans and using specialized augmentative and visual communication strategies, such as the use of PECS etc.
    • Able to prioritize, manage crisis, work independently and also as part of a team
    • Must have strong written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to compile accurate records and prepare reports
    • Available for continuous training

    The successful candidate must have or be ready to acquire:

    • Criminal Record Clearance, Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Child and Family Development
    • Valid BCDL class 5 and suitable driver's abstract
    • Valid First Aid and CPR certification
    • FoodSafe certification
    • MANDT Training will be offered in house
    • Food Safe Certificate
    • 3 References
